South Africa joins the Madrid Protocol soon

south-africa-1184103_1920Marques Class 46  announced that South Africa is on its way to join the Madrid Protocol for international registration of trademarks. The accession was approved by the Parliament and now is waiting for such approval by the President too.

As it is well-known, the Madrid System allows the international filing of trademarks based on a single application and fee. This news is a great relief for all foreign businesses that operate in South Africa or want to do that because they will be able to protect their trademarks easily.

Malaysia joins the Madrid Protocol

As it is well-known, using the Madrid system every applicant can register a trademark in different Member States based on one application, reducing the necessary time and money in that way.

Breaking news – Brazil joins the Madrid Protocol

The Protocol will come into force for the country on 02.10.2019. After this date, every applicant from a country part of the Madrid System will be able to designate Brazil in its international trademark applications. This is huge facilitation and a very cost-effective way for trademark registration.

The bill for that purpose has already been approved by the Parliament. Now The Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is expected to sign it in order Brazil to access the Madrid System.

This is a huge step for the country when it comes to trademark registration and it is a significant convenience for all companies that have an interest in the local market. The reason is that through Madrid Protocol you can register a trademark for Brazil easier and cheaper. Brazil is one of the few big economies that haven’t been part of the Madrid system so far. Fortunately, this will be changed as it is in the case of Canada too.

Samoa joins The Madrid Protocol for international registration of trademarks

WIPO informs about the Somoa accession to the Madrid Protocol for international registration of trademarks. In that way, the participating Member States become 103. According to the information Samoa will require individual fees for such marks as well as every license for an international trademark will have to be registered with the local Patent Office.

The Protocol will enter into force for the country on 04.03.2019.

Malawi joins the Madrid Protocol

malawi-674475_960_720WIPO reports about the accession of Malawi to the Madrid Protocol for international registration of trademarks. In that way, the participating Member States become 102.

Registration of international marks for the country will take up to 18 months, the period when a refusal can be issued. Apart from this, any trademark license in order to be valid on the territory of Malawi has to be registered in the local Patent Office.

The Protocol will come into force for the country on 25.12.2018.
